45% of Australians will experience one episode of mental illness in their lifetime and up to 90% of young people who suicide, suffer from a mental disorder such as depression or schizophrenia
However with support people can and do recover from Mental Illness.
On the 8th May, 2011, a dedicated group of 19 riders and 5 support crew are taking on thier own challenge, to help those young Australians recover from Mental Illness, by participating in the 2011 Mind, Ride to Recovery Challenge.
Our goal is to raise $100,000 for Mind Australia
The Ride to Recovery is a 6 day bike ride from Melbourne to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road. The ride is challenging and requires perseverance, determination, commitment, support and the ability to work with others. Riders will hit the wall; long distance cycling takes a cumulative toll on the body and requires persistence and mental determination to overcome some of the challenges road rides throw up.
Mind is a leading independent community based organisation working with people with Mental Illness to get them back into life. Each year they support over 3,200 clients and 4000 carers through 80 programs in South Australia and Victoria to rebuild their lives, reconnect with family and friends and rediscover life as full and active members of the community
Mind clients face challenges harder than this every day on their journey of recovery.
Like the riders, they hit the wall, like the riders they have a support team behind them and like the riders, it is up to them to finish the journey
We are looking forward to sharing our adventure through this blog site and celebrating our achievement.
